ABOUT US

In 2015, Apex Scaffolding (Exeter) Ltd underwent restructuring with the ambition of increasing its market share and becoming the supplier of choice on high profile projects with Blue Chip contractors. Building on a strong foundation, the company continues to mature and develop as our customers recognise the levels of service and expertise which Apex Scaffolding provides.

We see the key to future growth as being the availability of skilled labour and we continue to strengthen our existing loyal workforce via our long term training strategy, providing more jobs for the local economy. With our experience and dedicated workforce, office team and Directors we see Apex Scaffolding (Exeter) Ltd continuing to be one of the key suppliers to the building industry in the South West.

Glenn Haines
Managing Director

Glenn Haines joined Apex in 1996, having develloped his skills working for reputable NASC companies in the South Devon and Torbay area for 10 years. He quickly rose through the ranks as one of Apex’s first advanced scaffolders and became a trusted chargehand scaffolder working on many high profile jobs including rail work and Haki System roofs. In 2013 He joined the office team as a supervisor. When the management re-structuring took place, he was appointed as Contracts Director and subsequently Managing Director.
Glenn is a keen surfer and cyclist and likes nothing better than a weekend in the North Devon surf or cycling on the hills of Dartmoor with his family.

Mike Wimms
Operations Director, Director Responsible for Health & Safety

Mike Wimms joined the company in 1998, having previously worked as a scaffolder with several NASC companies in the local area. As Apex’s first full time supervisor he came into the office as the company first started to grow to meet the challenge of large scale construction projects. With such supervisory experience, the 2015 management restructure allowed him to take up the role of Operations Director and Director Responsible for Health & Safety Away from work, Mike leads a busy family life and is the ultimate rugby fan, pledging allegiance to the All Blacks and the Exeter Chiefs.

Matthew Cousins
Commercial Director

Matthew Cousins started in scaffolding as an apprentice in 2001. Having completed his training he was then offered a trainee estimator role in the company and by 2007 was the senior estimator and surveyor.
His rapid progression through the ranks of the business lead to his appointment as Commercial Director in 2015. Although still retaining his scaffolding and inspection qualifications, its fair to say that his spanners are now a bit rusty!

Matthew plays an active role in both the NASC and in the “Building Greater Exeter” organisation.

He leads a busy family life and when time permits, is a member of the Exeter Spitfire baseball team and regular supporter of the Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City.

Alan and Sarah Hogg

Alan and Sarah owned and ran Apex from the early 90s until 2015 when the successful management restructuring allowed them to hand over the reigns. Both ex- Managing Directors, Sarah is now retired, and Alan acts a consultant having stepped back from the day to day running of the business.

MEET THE TEAM

Apex have always been proud of our dedicated and loyal workforce. Expanding from 40 in 2017 up to an average of 55 by the end of 2019. All directly employed, and all offered permanent contracts on completion of a trial period.

Despite this expansion, we look to retain our staff, and many of our employees have been with us for over 10 years, and some have spent over 20 years on the tools with Apex. No matter the length of service, we always expect that anyone representing our company does so in a professional and courteous manner. We are always trying to change the perception of scaffolders, and we believe we are achieving this.

During their induction all new staff are given training and guidance on the level of service we expect them to provide for our clients, and all are asked to sign up to the standards set from our NASC membership and ISO accreditations. We regularly send out customer satisfaction surveys, and it is always the workforce who score highly, proving that they have bought into the ethos created at Apex Scaffolding.

Debbie Bond
Company Accountant

Debbie joined the company in 2016 following the retirement of her long serving predecessor. She has the unenviable task of balancing the books, whilst allowing the company to grow and invest in materials and equipment. That and keeping a tight rein on the directors! Outside work Debbie is an enthusiastic sailor and long-time Exeter Chiefs fan.

Roger Thorne

Scaffold Inspector/Supervisor

One of the Apex Originals, having first worked for the company in the 1990s, Roger hung up his spanner and became the company’s full-time scaffold inspector and supervisor. This role was created as part of our ongoing commitment to H&S and with all his many years of experience there will not be much that he misses. During his spare time, Roger will either be in his vegetable plot or riding his motorbike.

Dave Shaw

Contract Supervisor

In 2023 we asked Dave Shaw to take the step from the tools into the office. Following a hugely successful career with Apex since 2002, Dave has been working on our most high profile jobs and has supervised these gangs effectively from within. Now on a dual role he is coming into the office to learn the administration side, whilst still working on site part time.

Katie Corbin
Office Manager

Having been with Apex since 2014 Katie has done so much more than just manage the office. Taking on almost any task that is asked of her there is not really a job title that does her justice! When not in work mode she loves to head for the ski slopes at every opportunity with her family or wander along the banks of the river with her beloved black Labs.

Adam Bussell
Estimator/Surveyor

Formerly a serving member of the Royal Navy, Adam is now an experienced surveyor. After spending some time with the company as an HGV driver and trainee scaffolder gaining industry experience, Adam joined the office team in 2007 working in the estimating and surveying. He has a direct approach and a meticulous eye for detail winning many of the company’s most prestigious contracts. Adam is a devoted family man, cyclist and football coach. When time permits, he enjoys a bit of mountain biking in the Devon hills and is now the coach for his local junior football team.

Chris Black
Scaffold Supervisor

Another experienced member of our team, Chris has been in scaffolding for many years, and was a director at another SW company, until they were sold. The timing was good for Apex as he was available to join our team as a full-time supervisor. His input has been invaluable in developing strong relationships with our clients and improving on site Health and safety strategies. Chris and his family are keen campers / motor homers and time and family permitting, Chris is another Exeter Chiefs supporter.
